Every magazine and baby book has it's own lists of 'baby essentials' but most
of them are alarmingly long and make buying for a baby seem very
expensive. My list is of just 5 things you should have for a new
baby:
1. Baby Sling
No surprise that number one on my list is a baby sling, I truly think it's a must have item if you value
your sanity! Being able to comfort your newborn by keeping them close and
safe in the sling is wonderful, and it means you can make a cup of tea or play
with an older sibling at the same time. My favourite sling for a new baby
is the Moby Wrap Baby Carrier; it's soft and oh so comfortable and
once you've mastered the tying (really, it's easier than you think) very easy to
use. I used to put the Moby on in the morning and wear it all day, just
lifting baby in and out as needed.
2. Nursing Cushion
To ensure you get breastfeeding off to a good start you need to be
comfortable and get baby in a good position; the Widgey Nursing cushion will really help. It's also good
for back support during pregnancy, or to support baby when they are learning to
sit up.
3. Baby Sleeping Bag
Whether you intend to co-sleep or have baby alongside you in his crib, a baby
sleeping bag is a safe and easy alternative to blankets. It can't be
kicked off, baby can't slip down inside it, and it ensures a consistent
temperature, eliminating the dangers of overheating and the worry about baby
being too cold. I love the Bambino Merino sleeping bags which are 100% natural and
gorgeously soft; a great investment.
4. Mattress Protector/Change Mat
Hippychick make the most wonderful mattress
protectors, which really are a must-have item because frankly, there's going
to be all sorts of leakage from both you and baby in those first few
weeks. The small size flat protectors are brilliant for using as change
mats, as they can be rolled up really small for taking out and about but
are so much better than the usual plasticky ones you find in most changing
bags. They are also handy for slipping underneath the toddler who's fallen
asleep without a nappy on, and have a million other uses.
5. Muslin Cloths
Continuing on the theme of leaks and spills, muslin cloths are vital.
They are surprisingly absorbent and can be folded into a nappy for a newborn if
you're planning to use cloth nappies, and are seriously essential as burping
cloths and for general mopping up of sick, spills etc. Also handy as a
discreet cover up if you're concerned about breastfeeding in public. I
particularly like the Little Ewe or Disana ones which are bigger and softer than
most.
Don't rush into buying for your baby, the most important thing to
remember is that the shops don't suddenly close once you've given
birth.
While it's important to feel prepared, often you'll make wiser purchases if
you wait until you find you really need a product. There are so many
lovely things for babies on the market and it's easy to think you 'need' it all,
but if you stick to practical essential items at first you'll be able to save
the money for buying something really special later on.
